What is Design?

Design is either a symbol that can be easily communicated and understood by other people, or a logo that represents a certain meaning for the artist. The design piece is usually very well done and could be easily identified. A piece is an object or a set of words that mean something. Design is also something that can be ridiculously intricate or incredibly simple.

One aspect of design is that it’s impractical and useless but it looks pleasing to the eye. An intricate design would be something like a detailed pattern on a fancy quilt. Each pattern would have to be beautifully handcrafted. The design of the quilt should have a sense of homeliness and should look comfortable. It should look like something your grandma would make.

Design is also creating a book. You have to design the story, the pictures and the characters. You have to decide on what fonts to use and how long your paragraphs have to be. The cover must be neat and not messy. It has to attract the viewer with an illustration or an exciting title.

Usually, design is used for communicating an idea. For example, let's say you are looking at a restroom sign with text. On it you see a figure of a man which automatically means that this sign must belong to the men’s room. The text under the figure proves your speculation that this is the men’s room. As you can see, the images of the man is easily communicated from the sign to the eyes of the viewer. There was no need to have someone explain that the sign is for the men’s room. This is an example of a simple design.

Design is a representation. It represents either a symbol or something nice to look at. You can see design everywhere you go. You can see it on books, you can see it on cars, or you can see it on subway maps. It’s on top of houses and it’s in the gardens. Design is on the move.
